I was intrigued by the premise and genuinely liked some of the characters, but skeptical from the beginning once the FMC started changing herself and her body because of a douchey-ex. I was hopeful it was going to take a big turn into a full-scale personal revelation about body-neutrality, acceptance, and her personal journey navigating fatphobia, but we never got there and that was really disappointing. In the end, yeah, her ex didn't get her back, but his words were still her driving force for every move she made to "better" herself and change her appearance. It took the sweetness out of the end for me, along with the fact that she was still actively participating in and perpetuating diet culture at the end of the book. On the plus side - the food descriptions were mouthwatering and some of the spice was really enjoyable.

Tw: fat phobia
3.5 This was a fun and cute story with empowerment in the end. I hoped that there was a focus on not changing one’s self for another person, but that didn’t change until the very end. Also, the whole idea of the “revenge body” eek.
Overall I still liked this!

I wanted to love this book so bad, especially since I've seen it on so many Black romance lists but this was a major disappointment. I hated the constant homeless "joke." It wasn't funny the first time and it definitely wasn't funny the dozens of times afterward. I didn't like the subtle pro-cop points. They're not a major point of the plot but that's something that will always give me the ick. The constant run-ins with the terrible ex got so annoying and honestly, this whole book was incredibly repetitive. I love a good no thoughts, just vibes romance but this was not the one.

ya know, as soon as characters are introduced and context given, you will be able to figure out every single plot point with 100% accuracy. however, what fun you’ll have getting there! savvy was so cool. and every woman deserves the support group she had. bless.
