Latest (last?) of Becker's method/practice books starting with Writing for Social Scientists, one cannot but admire the 89-year old Becker for sharing the wisdom from a long career with such clarity. I read this as much a methods book as a biography, hence perhaps I liked the examples from Becker's own research and collaborations best. Some of the issues are quite standard methodological fare, but always told in an engaging way. It was also a pleasure to see that while he has been rather dismissive of his own 'labeling theory', the methodological premise of the work pops up in many of the examples in this book.

Great overview of what social science data are and how we should approach them critically. Dozens of fun examples.
