The land of Winterkeep is discovered to the east of Monsea and Bitterblue decides to travel there to see this miraculous democratic republic for herself. But something is not right. First, Bitterblue disappears and is feared dead on the journey. As Giddon and Hava search for answers, a young curious girl, Lovisa, who happens to be the daughter of Winterkeep's leader, is following the trail of something as well. Something nefarious is going on in Winterkeep. Will these three be able to get to the bottom of it? A fantastic addition the the Graceling universe and highly recommended for fantasy lovers.

Compared to her other novels, I was disappointed in this one. Her descriptive writing, especially concerning the characters of color, fell so flat. I don't feel like much character development occurred. I feel like the Graceling Realm books would have been better off without this one written.

full disclosure i read graceling and fire and bitterblue in middle school over a decade ago. so coming right into this with nothing more than a quick wikipedia summary read did not prepare me for this book at all - because it reads nothing like how i remembered graceling reading. i love love love the setting (once again, i am a sucker for post industrial fantasy), feel. a lot of emotions for lovisa, and was also extremely extremely surprised at the maturity rating this book would probably get (because i didn't remember graceling being like that at all!)

(also i did rush to finish this on dec 31 so i can add one more book to my 2024 summary lol)
