This has been on my shelf for far too long - so long, all I could remember about it was that I wanted to read it! I really enjoyed it, it was quirky and sweet and a little mysterious. I will need to pick up more Annie Hartnett

This book surprised me. I wasn't sure what to expect but it fit a book challenge I do each month, and a Booktuber I watch had read it and rated it highly. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it at first but I couldn't stop reading. The characters were so interesting and I just had to know what happens to them. I really liked the ghosts of the townspeople. I thought they really added to the story. This book is a mixture of genres and I thought it worked. There was a little bit of a mystery with a character believed to be missing, magical realism with the ghosts, and a contemporary novel with the main character finding herself. There's also pictures and writings of naturalist Ernest Harold Baynes which was another element that I thought really added to the story. The characters and tone are quirky but I laughed out loud and I loved all the characters, they really made the book.
Trigger warning: Illness of a parent, death of a parent, mentions of drugs and overdosing, illness of a child, death of a child, a chicken is killed by a fox.

Boring, every chapter feels the same and has too similar of a tone.

This book was GREAT - so distinctly witty and endearing. I wish the library had more copies in circulation so it would be an option for book club.

Loved the narrative device of the folks in the town cemetery observing + rooting for everyone, the celebration of many kinds of animals, and the dynamite jokes.
