I really liked this book. Not sure it was entirely believable, but a great yarn, you were surprised by all the plot twists. It all fit together well, though, and the ending was satisfying. It was written skillfully, I liked the prose. Makes you want to explore the LA, CA area.

White Oleander Astrid is the only child of a single mother whose name is Ingrid. Ingrid is a brilliant and beautiful woman who is highly appreciative of beauty and looks down on people who do not possess it. She was always in control until she met Barry. Not used to rejection, she murders him and is sent to prison. Astrid is then sent to a series of foster homes, each one with a different challenge.

5/5 stars. i loved it. i tasted the words on my lips, and they were a lyrical delicacy. the characters were well developed, the narration was poetic, and this is now one of my all-time favorite books. the prose was like ingrid, beautiful and fleeting in oleander time, but with bits like astrid, harsh and gritty while painting an unforgiving portrait of a world that isn't kind. you know it's a beautifully written book when even the language is reminiscent of the characters whose tales it tells.

you want remember, so just remember.

it's the kind of book that lingers on your lips and seeps into your own prose long after it's done. it's the kind of book you want to taste and savor, and that you'll remember the next time you see bright turquoise hues, scavenged art, and a lost little girl.

My FAVORITE book in 8th or 9th grade but seems pretty melodramatic now
