"I can’t help thinking that we’re more than the sum total of our choices, that all the paths we might have taken factor somehow into the math of our identity."

My first book by this author and he is a beautiful writer. It was fast paced and thought provoking about parallel universes. Much like "Sliding Doors" and "Ground Hog Day."

A truly enjoyable read that has caused me to ponder about my own choices.

Entertaining, a page turner. It's exactly what I needed in this phase of my life busy with work and baby who never sleeps at night!

Jason Dessen is a physics professor at some local college. Despite being really smart, he didn't accomplish what he thought he will. He met Daniela, his wife, 15 years ago. She got pregnant 2.5 months after they met and instead of abandoning the whole thing, he decided to build a life with Daniela and their son Charlie. Daniela also left her art career which was at a turning point. She became a house wife and focused on Charlie.

One night, Jason gets abducted. The abductor asks him to take all his clothes off and then injects Jason with some needle and leaves. Jason wakes up in an unknown facility. People are happy that he is awake. He is unsure about what is happening to him. He tries to escape and goes back to his house but the house is different. It's not his old house. Fast forward a few events and he discovers that his wife Daniela is a famous artist and dating Ryan his friend who is no longer a famous physicist. In fact he is the famous physicist with the famous award. Daniella doesn't know of Charlie. She tells him they split over 15 years ago after he decided that the pregnancy would complicate his life. He spends 2 days at Daniella's place and tells her everything he knows.

He realizes eventually that the abductor is just himself trying from this different branch of his life's time line. He looks over the research that "Jason2" did and how he built this box that basically can take you to a different branch of your life (alternative path). A few events later and after an altercation with the lab people he goes on a long adventure visiting different branches in order to reach the original branch "his world". He succeeds after many tries and many difficult to see worlds like the world with the family starving to death in their own home or the world where he sees his wife die in front of him etc.

Unfortunately after arriving at his original world, he finds out that MANY other Jasons are arriving too to their original world. It seems like whenever he opened a door in the box, he not only chose a different path but also kind of forked himself. So now it's him and the other Jason who chose a different door and so on. All of these Jasons want Daniela and Charlie back. But the original Jason he gets an idea different than the other Jasons to get to Daniela and Charlie and take them somewhere safe.

What a mind-bending book! If you like physics, you will be wowed. I thought it was a thriller at the beginning, then a sci-fi, then I found it’s more like a beautiful love story, in the end I am pretty sure it’s about some deep stuffs of life.
