Small world e small book!

Incredibly short. Not really any time to learn or understand characters. Still fun though.

Ehhhhhhhh? If L&K is your jam, sure, track this down. It's 16 pages of comic, and 16 pages of behind-the-scenes scripts and such, retreating what you just read. I didn't need it, but if you live for that sort of stuff, this delivers.

The Small World story is, on its own, a neat little one-shot that might set up another (previous) generation of Lockes for a new storyline, and it's got some great hand drawn boogers, but if this hadn't been staring me in the face at my local library, I probably would've skipped it.

Is a cute little story that gives you just a little extra from the Locke and Key world. Almost half of the book is information, sketches and interviews about the processes how this book was made and about the Locke and Key series.

Gorgeously written and illustrated as always.

THE GOOD:

Man oh man, do I love this book. First, it’s a trip back into the world of my favorite comic of all time, Locke and Key. I would read just about anything this team put together. And that’s one thing I really love about these books, the same team has stuck together throughout the entire process. Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Jay Fotos have been working together since the beginning to create a world I adore with a story I can’t get enough of. Thank you to each of them.

The art and the story are as good as the regular series. Everyone involved is running full steam. The detail in Rodriguez's work can be a bit overwhelming on the first read through, but when you have time to go back and really appreciate each page, it just gets better. I don’t know how he puts so much into every panel. I’m still finding new things.

Then you have Jay Fotos firing on all cylinders. His coloring blows my mind. His masterful touch on things like candlelight and shadows or the contours of the faces of the characters brings a whole level of life to these books that wouldn’t exist without him. Jay’s art mixed with that of Rodriguez is probably my favorite in comic history. I’ll never get sick of these two working together.

As with every Locke and Key book, the art is just as important as the story itself. None of it could survive without the others, and this team knows how to deliver their magic every single time. It was so nice to see they didn’t lose a step after the brief hiatus.

THE BAD:

People who have never read Locke and Key may be a little lost with things like the shadows that serve the family or the crown with the key in it. They may not understand references like the Giant Key, for instance. I don’t really have anything else bad to say about this book.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

Even with what I just said, I think one could easily read this book to get a feel for what Locke and Key is and then dive into the full series. I highly suggest doing it the other way around, however. It’s Keyhouse. We’ve never gone chronologically through history. Why would we start now? ;)

The obviousness of Joe Hill’s dialogue throughout the book may be lost on some not familiar with him. For me, being in on the fact that Hill is poking fun at the decaying ideals of the turn of the twentieth century makes the reading hilarious in parts. While certain characters try to push the life of a homemaker on the young girls, we are privy to just how cunning and brilliant the girls really are, seeing a side of them that even their parents do not understand.

ONE FINAL THOUGHT:
Holy crap they packed a lot into 24 pages of greatness.

9.5 out of 10.0.
I knocked off points for not giving me more issues.
