I am giving this book three stars because I just don’t know how I feel about it......I LOVED and devoured Book Thief. It still haunts me but this story I just cannot make my mind up about.

A strong ending and an understanding that it was written with reverence for the ancient epics made me round up from 3.5 to 4 stars. At times it dragged, and every detail was so steeped in meaning that it made me *almost* roll my eyes a few times. The characters and story were solid.

The first book I’ve finished in 2021. This is a beautiful book, and I will admit it took time to hook me. However, once I got a feel for the storytelling and way Zusak plays with the timeline and narration, I was hooked. The characters are all so interesting and complex; you feel you’re there in their chaotic house.

Hard to read at times, jumps around from place to place and from person to person an awful lot with very little warning. A little confusing - to be honest I’m still not entirely sure what the plot actually was?? So I may have to reread at some point in the future. A little hard to fall into a natural rhythm with reading it, but the parts that were not so confusing and easier to read, I did enjoy quite a lot.

reread after a few years and glad to report it is still probably my favourite book

4.5 stars ** A beautifully haunting story about a family who lost their mother to cancer. I found the jumps between past and present to be enlightening and helpful in seeing the parallels between characters' stories.
