Honestly, I’ve never not finished a book I’ve started but this book was awful. The author’s writing is wonderful but he can’t seem to put a full story together with it. I tried so many times to keep reading but just felt it to be very flat.

Subiectul e interesant.

Beautiful. Audiobook is captivating

There are two things that I want to say about this book. 1. At about the 1/3 way point, I started crying. I continued to cry for many, many, many pages to come. It's a deeply emotional and touching book, with both happy and sad moments. It deals with the issue of loss in a number of different ways and through the exploration of a number of different types of losses. 2. It was not an easy read. I did enjoy it and would recommend it, but the plot was very much non-chronological (although this was appropriate to the themes of the novel) and the writing style was heavy with metaphor. A challenging read, but one that was well worth the effort because the story as a whole is quite beautiful.

this book felt so illusory and ethereal and i just don’t know why

maybe a 2.5? It pains me to rate it this low because Markus Zusak is one of my favourite authors.

I do love Markus Zusak’s writing style for the most part (although I found in this one there were parts where the writing made it almost impossible to understand what literally was going on), but this one fell really flat for me.

I honestly felt like this was trying way too hard to have some kind of profound metaphorical message, and I don’t feel like I ever had a satisfying moment of clarity or climax. While I liked the characters, I didn’t feel emotionally moved by them. I also never actually felt like the boys’ relationship with their father ended up getting explored too much, so there wasn’t much emotional payoff there. Even the reveal of Clay’s “big secret” didn’t really have much impact for me (and didn’t feel like much of a reveal)?

There were some plot sections (including literally every chapter that had something to do with horse racing) that I felt added exactly nothing and I basically skimmed.

This book wasn’t boring or tough to get through for me, I just didn’t feel like it went anywhere. I was expecting a much bigger emotional impact.
