I really hated the Wen short story. I feel like it really made it seem like her only motivations in life are Hilo. Idk, I just wanted more for her

Jade Shards is a wonderful title for this collection of short stories. These vignettes all hit home for the series and expanded upon character relationships in great ways. The Green Bone Saga has become a favorite of mine and these prequel tales have reminded me why it is so good. There is lots to love here for me. "The Witch and Her Friend" is the first and best story in my opinion. Ayt Mada is just a blast to follow. And then the Hilo and Wen love story should be a fan favorite as it really gives a good back story for them. I wouldn't tell people to start here, there is too much missed context with out the first book at least. But anyone who is a fan of the series should definitely check these stories out.

Both of Fonda Lee’s Green Bone novellas are spot on. They add depth to the existing world and will not disappoint and this one gives all our main characters additional page time in a way that feels fitting. (Well, they will be disappointing in that they don’t aren’t more full-length novels and we can’t stay with these characters forever.)
But Lee also provides some personal narrative to why she wrote each story which added even more to the world.
