Caudill #2 - I really like this story and I learned a lot. I wish I read a book like this when I was in 7th grade so that I was more aware of my privilege in the US

An interesting story about a part of history I know little about.

Incredible book, doesn't read like a middle grade novel either.

3.5 stars.

A sometimes gut-punching portrayal of a part of history, I hadn’t known about. The duel narrative interrupts what could be an otherwise overwhelming account of the Ukrainian famine in the 1930s.

Three Ukranian cousins from a familly town apart by Stalin's man made famine, and one grandson unraveling the story.
The chapters bounce between 4 different points of view.
I got a little confused following who was who.
Cried a lot at the end.
Themes: Ukraine, famine, survivors guild, journalism

4.5 stars - Really connected story telling through three points of view about a historical tragedy that is not wide known. It is clear that the author has a deep connection to the history through her own family, which she explains at the end.

It took me some time to get into the rhythm of this book, but once I did it was a very quick read.

I should have seen the plot twist coming near the end of the book -- what a masterful job by Marsh executing this.

I am amazed at how Marsh was able to carry such heavy topics and make them so accessible for a young audience.
