It felt too much like the author made a copy of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and then edited it instead of writing a new story. Why did both girls have to be Covey? Also, the way Haymitch talked about Lenore Dove felt really possessive to me. The epilogue was the best part.

The final part of the book, everything after the end of the games, was the best part for me. The disturbing and horrifying moments seemed more disturbing and horrifying to me as an adult than when I read the original HG series as a member of the intended age demographic. Maybe that's only natural. Overall, maybe the least essential of any of the HG books so far. Suzanne Collins' trademark blink-and-you'll-miss-it pacing style seems dialed up to an eleven in this book, or maybe I'm just getting older.
