I came to this book after reading The Will of the Many, which has been often compared to the Hunger Games. I had trouble following TWOTM at times because of the length of the world building and the general wordiness. So I was in the right mindset for this YA book before beginning. My expectations for this book were set quite low from the start. I came for the bloodbath and that was it. I enjoyed the lore that connected parts to the original trilogy and was thoroughly entertained the entire time. BUT that’s all I got out of it. There were parts that annoyed me (like the wannabe Edgar Allen Poetry sprinkled throughout) and how often Hayworth would say “Lenora Dove.” I also did not feel an emotional connection to any of the other tributes, or any of the other characters, and so their deaths didn’t hit the way that was intended. So did the book serve its purpose to entertain? For sure. But I’m not going to be counting down the days until the movie comes out.
