The hunger games series is such an iconic one of my middle school experience! I enjoyed the prequel Songbirds and Snakes much more than I had been anticipating, so I was excited to pick up Haymitch’s book, and I was immediately hooked back into its world. I loved seeing the similarities and differences with this events of the hunger games from its prequel and original trilogy. This one had a lot of the same things I loved (the setup to the games and ensemble cast) and didn’t like (graphic scenes in the games and excessive songs/poetry) in the other Hunger Games books. I liked a lot of the new characters introduced - I didn’t have that much of a recollection of the original trilogy characters, so some of those reappearances didn’t work as well for me. I also liked a lot of what this had to say about how narratives can be manipulated and rebellions can fail, but I didn’t always love the ways Haymitch was included in that story. Ultimately I had a few things that bugged me in this one, but I couldn’t put it down, and I need to reread the original trilogy! 🗣👤📈👯♀️☀️
