An interesting take on an autobiography. Murakami is honest, funny and poignant. Warning: If listen to this on audible WHILST going for a run, you'll be inspired in places - but if it's during the Athens marathon chapter, you'll come home needing a cold beer...

Its not groundbreaking, its not earth shattering but its endearing and grew on me. Of course he is talking to a convert, so its an easy conversation. Enjoyed it, never got frustrated with it and like a gentle long run the perfect length.

A heartwarming memoir about Haruki Murakami’s passion for running and how it profoundly enhanced his career as a writer. This is a story of discipline and resilience—how running kept him on track, year after year, both physically and mentally. It’s about how staying in shape through running kept him alive in the deepest sense, reminding us of the essential connection between the body and the soul.

Murakami’s famous quote, “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional,” encapsulates his mindset not just about running, but about life. He focuses on the mental challenges associated with endurance and persistence rather than the technical aspects of the sport.

Whether or not you’re a fan of Murakami’s signature fiction style, this memoir offers something different. It reveals the man behind the pen, without the façade of his fictional worlds. Through this deeply personal reflection, Murakami gives us a rare glimpse into his life. It’s a gift for readers—and for runners—who seek inspiration, motivation, or simply a quiet, meditative read about passion, discipline, and the power of self-reflection.

I found this little book a quiet pleasure. Inspirational in parts and interesting in others. I like to do small runs, not long distances, so Murakami’s achievements are far greater than mine will ever be! This is a nice introduction to his non fiction writing and I am looking forward to reading another book by him - ‘Underground: the Tokyo gas attack and the Japanese Psyche.
