I picked up this memoir as an introduction to Murakami’s work, but also because running has become my personality. It was an easy and enjoyable read, and if you’re into running, it’s definitely inspiring and motivating.

When it comes to his writing style, at least for this book, I found it a bit repetitive and lacking emotion. Still, I liked the parts where he added some philosophy.

A quote that stuck with me was:
“A person doesn’t become a runner because someone recommends it. People basically become runners because they’re meant to.”

I’d rate it 3.5 stars, but since that’s not an option, I’m rounding it up to 4 stars because I still enjoyed it. Now, I’m heading out for my first run since finishing the book, curious to see if any of his philosophy sticks with me.

Not necessarily the most inspiring read, though I’m sure he never meant it to be. It reads more like a stream of consciousness, a bunch of thoughts and notes jotted down and organized for a published book. I suppose I read this book with the wrong intentions - I was looking to be provoked into thoughtfulness about running. Yet, I was only as thoughtful as the author’s own reflections of his life. Which is...fine. But I was overall uninterested and unsatisfied.

Ilahduttava pikku kirja.

Where does running fit in your life? Why do it at all? How does your experience of the sport change over time? I appreciate Murakami's insightful reflections on all these questions.
