The story follows Onyesonwu, a child of rape who is marked as being different from the society she lives in. But then Onyesonwu starts to discover powers that she possesses and learns that someone wants her dead. She must work together with her friends and use her newfound powers to rewrite the tragedies that surround her.
'Who Fears Death' deals with a lot of hard subjects, including rape, genocide, and persecution. And yet there is such a grace to the way that Okorafor writes about these difficult topics. Onyesonwu encounters many horrific things but she is also continually growing stronger. This story has some incredible friendships, compelling familial and romantic relationships, and hope at its core. I think it's best going in not knowing much more than the blurb. Be prepared for the tough subjects that will be covered but also for the incredible characters, intriguing post-apocalyptic world, and the heart Okorafor pours into every page.
