This has been such an honour to read. Onyesonwu is a child of rape, of anger and of magic. Living in a post apocalyptic African society Onye is living through a genocide of her motherโ€™s people committed by the people of her unknown biological father. When ancient shapeshifter magic stores in her bones Onyesonwu knows she can keep her primal rage silent no more and sets into the desert to change the world.

Listen, if you are going to read this book there are a ton of trigger warnings. But, oh god is it worth it. This book is going to be one I think I about constantly. Please read it if you have the capacity.

Full of vivid imagery and a much heavier subject matter than other novels I've read by this author. I really love that Okorafor brings in a lot of cultural pieces that I'm not necessarily familiar with and weaves them into these stories.

This was also a much denser novel than others I've read from this author. There are quite a few chapters that don't necessarily add to the plot but definitely add the the characters lives and atmosphere of the story.

This book felt a little slow paced for me and then rushed at the end. A lot of the story was focused on Onyesonwu's coming of age, so I would describe the book as a Bildungsroman/hero's journey with post-apocalyptic and fantasy elements. Some of the elements in this book fell a bit flat for me, but I still plan to continue reading Okorafor's work as I deeply appreciate the worlds she imagines.

Please be mindful of the content warnings before reading as there are a lot of heavy topics discussed.

when i say this book had me fucking GAGGING like idk... i cant even tell u why this book had me gripped but it did!! even if i didnt fuck with any of the men in this entire book (mwita on VERY FUCKING THIN ICE), it was such a good ride i simply couldn't put it down!! i love the way magic works in this world and how unabashedly human it is โ€” our teen protagonists & co kill, have sex, and fight and aren't (permanently) shamed for acting like teens in a fucked up post apocalyptic magical sudan! this is the first adult fantasy book ive finished in a long time where i didn't feel like the worldbuilding was lackluster, where the prose didnt bore me to tears and the characters had some meat to their bones! it wasn't convoluted (like so many white fantasy stories are ๐Ÿ™„), the use of words i didn't know didn't take away from my reading experience, and i wasnt bothered by it's pacing, like you really need to sit with onye's journey we cant just skip to the action!

i was a bit confused by the end but after reading some (very poor interpretations of this book on reddit) i got it and really appreciate that ofc for the woman who does not fear death, death would not be a limitation! i need time to sit with it ofc, but whether or not onye is alive doesn't matter to me (at least for now) bc what does matter is that a sorceress like her is gonna find a way to connect to the ones she loves!! and i hope she does, i hope she's chilling w/ binta, luyu, mwita & their child, i hope her mother visits in between her lessons w/ aro. i also love that daib's end is worse than death โ€” he's forever fucked up by mwita, can't do magic without sacrificing his health/life, AND every single woman has powers!! he just has to sit there and watch his daughter's legacy on the face of each n every woman he walks past โ€” nuru, okeke, or ewu โ€” and know that if he hadnt been such a sick bastard all these years ago he never would've fucked around with the wrong one and found out!!

For a novel so focused the magical system driving it, I really appreciated the way that technology coexisted with Eshu and the Mystic Points and juju, and the way that the history of both magic and tech was interwoven with the social development and sociopolitical history of the world. I also really appreciated the way that the idea of narrative awareness as both trap and escape played out; Mwitu gives in to the ending of his story because he's sort of come to terms with the idea that his story exists to serve Onyesonwu's - which is something he's struggled with the whole book, the idea that she is less important than him because she's a woman, and even that is a massive weighty flaw because of its origins in his first teacher, who was
Onyesonwu's biological father and her mother's rapist and a huge misogynist
- and seeing that drives Onyesonwu to take her knowledge of how her story should end and actively refuse and resist it with the very thing that makes her more powerful and "important" than Mwitu. That, in concert with the parable about the prince and Tia and how it shaped Onyesonwu's thinking in the middle of the book as well as the way that her own mother spreading Onyesonwu's story was one of the biggest weapons in her arsenal against these horrific conquering-and-enslavement wars engulfing the West, was a really exciting way to bring the idea of storytelling into the story itself on multiple different levels. It's a really skillful and immersive book, and I'm really glad I picked it up. Even moments and plot beats I didn't totally enjoy in the moment served a purpose and furthered the novel and resolved themselves in satisfying ways.
