This was very well written, and slightly more horror-esque than I was expecting, but in a very good way! It encapsulates a lot of post civil war black culture, Gullah culture, and African American mythology that isn’t seen very often while still being full of action and violence that make some fantasy/horror novels so great! It is a riveting mix of culture and creep that never stops moving. I’m hoping that by the epilogue there will be more to come!

I thought this was well-written and had important themes....but it was a stretch for me in terms of the horror and gore.

Not what I was expecting, but a powerful story. I suppose I should have realized that a Hugo/Nebula award winning writer’s book would include some element of fantasy, but I think I added this without paying attention to that element. Still, if you enjoyed ‘Lovecraft Country’ you’re going to love this book.

Action packed, KKK beast monsters, Black KKK slayer heroes, some kind of magic system, fast paced, very descriptive ! I can see this book turning into a movie.
The audiobook was PHENOMENAL! I cannot stress that enough I loved every second of it. The voice actor gave what needed to be gave that’s for sure. I’m not sure I would of been that immersed into the story w/o the audiobook tbh.
I gave this book 4.5 stars because there is a fantasy element to it and I’m not a big fantasy girl so I had to take a .5 point off but other then that I really did enjoy the story.

 10/10 would recommend!

This book is perfectly crafted - the author knew exactly what story he wanted to tell. Equal parts campy and heartwrenching and nauseatingly gory, it's one of those rare books that combines a very strong and nuanced allegory without being clumsy about it. Going into it, I was a bit worried about the premise - Klan members secretly being interdimensional monsters is a good way to erase the real-life atrocities committed by the KKK - but Clark manages to walk the line well, never absolving the actions of the real Klan.
A special shout-out to the audiobook narrator, Channie Waites, for not just doing a great job, but for actually singing the songs that appear in the book! I think that's the first time I've ever heard a narrator sing instead of just doing that singsong-y chant thing.
