Listened to the audiobook version and it was touching to hear when she got choked up while reading. This was looooong, but she has lived thru and influenced some amazing things.
Her explanation of her abortion I think will stick with me - I know what life before Roe v Wade was like, but the way she described the hurdles she had to go thru even in CA was kind of eye opening (and heart breaking thinking of the women that didn’t have the privilege of living there, or having the money to afford a safe procedure)

What a fascinating life!! Billie Jean King’s life has constantly taken turns and it was wonderful to hear her perspective. At times, the book did drag a bit if you aren’t very interested in technical information about tennis, but it’s definitely worth powering through
"there is no demographic in this world that gives less of a flip than 70 year old lesbians"
this woman is amazing, very glad to have learned more about her life and work in the sports world and beyond in the fight for equality.

Graphic: Eating disorder, Homophobia, Misogyny, Outing
Minor: Toxic relationship, Abortion, Death of parent
I was very impressed with this book and even more so with Billie Jean King. I knew SOME of the activism that she triggered but never to the level that she was involved in. She has lived a fascinating life so far and her self realization at her own faults in addition to her strengths were very inspiring. Highly recommend and not just to sports fans.
“But if you’re in the business for change you have to play the long game”
From the moment Billie started talking I was absolutely delighted by this audio book. Her voice takes an otherwise open, vulnerable, wise book and gives you just that much more of a connection to her incredible life and hard-won understanding of the world. As a queer woman, I found this to be a grounding read as Billie’s naturally bridges todays challenges for the queer community to yesterdays. But beyond any one aspect of her identity, the book is more broadly about how one athlete set out to balance achieving personal goals in the context of bias based barriers with using the social and cultural capital she ends up with to advocate for lasting change. I’m so grateful she dedicated the time to share her whole story.
