Hailey Edwards consistently writes great characters and this book is no different. There were quite a few new characters to meet, both on the ally side and the adversary side. What I think I like best about her characters is that there aren’t many that are truly black or white. It may be at first we perceive them to be one way and learn later – sometimes much later –that they are really in the gray. We only discover these things as Grier experiences them, which lends itself to the reader experience.

Wow wow wow.... Hailey Edwards has done it again with this amazing insight into our heroine Grier and her battle for love and family while trying to figure out how her life can work now. Betwene Boaz, Linus, Wooley and Keet with the integration of some new blood things are about to get even crazier.

This is the book I've been waiting for since I started the series. The book where Grier is betrayed by those she loves most, and where she realizes she needs to let go of her past in order to accept her future. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't wishing additional pain and suffering on her by any stretch, but I feel like the events of this book were necessary for her to move on in a positive way. Sometimes we need to walk away from our past in order to have a better future.

I'm not surprised Boaz and Amelie acted as they did. Neither have had Grier's best interests at heart from the beginning, for all she thought of them as her only family. I really dislike their parents, and I'm glad Grier has some closure there.

I love that Linus allows Grier the space she needs to figure herself out, while still supporting her. This is the pairing I expected from the beginning, and I love the way things are progressing between them.

I am enjoying this series so far, but the MCs overall stupidity is getting to me. She doesn’t want to be a prisoner, but she keeps stupidly placing herself in danger. “I would rather die than be behind a locked door” she says.. okay then maybe accept some protection from your very skilled and very willing friends? You know, instead of going out in public alone and legit announcing your first and last name to strangers..

She doesn’t want to be coddled, but felt hurt when Linus didn’t immediately soothe her burned fingers.

She complained that Boaz wasnt giving her enough attention, but she never called or texted him either. It’s a two way street. Now if he was ignoring her messages, I’d feel sympathy but typically I don’t shed tears over someone I make no effort to speak to, not speaking to me.

That’s not to say that Boaz has any excuse. I’m pretty upset that he lead her on like that for so long and was so much of a little bitch that he ghosted her. Both him and Amelie I’ve had some issues with. They feel like the jock and catty cheerleader, both tromp all over Grier’s feelings in an almost manipulative way.

I liked Linus since the beginning, he takes care of Grier personally, whereas Boaz only ever took care of Grier’s person

Lastly.. at first I thought that all the references to how skinny Grier was could be attributed to highlighting how badly she was mistreated in captivity.. but the excessive comments about how much she consumes churros, marshmallows and chocolate, coupled with the full round meals she’s fed which include bacon…

It now seems more like a “ohmigawd haha I eat so much and just never gain any weight!” And I’m over it, it adds nothing to the story and I keep picturing Grier as some pale bony skeletal thing.. I guess the image fits for a necromancer? But the way everyone keeps saying she’s hot makes me think she’s not as unhealthily frail as the descriptions.

fast-paced

I don't want to put in any spoilers - but there's a part of the book when Grier gets super betrayed, and instead of crying she punches someone in the face. AND I WAS SCREAMING IN SUPPORT. She cried later, but only AFTER she clocked this person right in the damn jaw- in front of A LOT of people. And I was never prouder of her. Grier is turning into a bad bitch, and I am here for it!!!!

Ok, now I’m hooked...

I think this is the best one so far. The pacing was much slower in the other two and in this one, the action was almost nonstop. We found out a bit more about Grier’s background and the world is getting more interesting too.

“We are all responsible for what we do—or don’t do—and that’s it.”

How to Break an Undead Heart honors its title and delivers a story that is painful yet realistic, which contributes wonderfully to the developed of Grier as a character. There is still some humor to balance out the sadness, and the plot continues with its fast pace and charm. The stakes are definitely higher in this one and every single chapter and twist is a treat.

Hailey Edwards has done an incredible job with this series. The writing and plot only get better and better with each new installment. The different aspects of the world-building also get as much attention as the characters and romance and all come together to move the story forward. There is quite a bit of heartbreak in this one, but the overall message is still one of hope.

The plot is once again very well-written and with pretty much all showing instead of telling this time. I find that the mystery is also executed quite well, and the predictableness found in the previous books is almost nonexistent in this one. The writing really is just getting better and more polished as the series progresses and I absolutely love it!

The character development still continues to be my absolute favorite thing, even more so when the changes to characters aren’t done so only to make them better people. It’s an incredibly realistic take on people and I appreciate so so much what Edwards has done with her story. And we got more Linus! My fave! And less Boaz! Really not my fave!

And speaking of which… YAAAAASSS, FINALLY!!! Spoilers ahead because I am just so! happy! with how this turned out, despite Grier’s broken heart.

I was never sold on Boaz as a love interest and have previously mentioned that his entire thing with Grier felt kind of incestuous to me and had bits which made me uncomfortable at times. Well, BYE BOAZ! In a pretty painful — for Grier — turn of events, Boaz has shown his true colors. I am so delighted by how Edwards has managed to develop their arc throughout the series which lead them right to this moment. It’s like a chapter of Grier’s journey coming to a close, and I LOVE IT.

In the end, How to Break an Undead Heart makes me feel sad things for Grier, but it has absolutely won my heart as one of my favorite series installments so far. The character development is on point, the world-building keeps getting cooler and cooler, and there’s still some humor to balance out a rather tense plot.
