Absolutely loved this book! Such a well told story that kept me hooked all the way through. Just one problem with it, and its kind of a deal breaker for me. There's a huge emphasis on specialness/uniquness which is not a terrible thing on its own, but the fact that its SUCH a big theme of the book I just don't think is a great message, especially for kids. Because its one thing to be liked and praised for being special in a way that is sort of normal, but being the only person in a worlds' entire history that is as powerful as that (100% magical) is just too far. As I read it I hoped that in the end they wouldn't go for the trope of everyone around them getting taken out in some way so they had to save the world all on their own with the power of their specialness, because they had great friends and people who supported them. Even the most talented special person needs help right? But no, in the end it happened exactly as I had hoped against. I still recommend if you want a fun read, but for as great as the characters and story were, that theme or detail just takes it too far.

A wonderful story with delightful characters and really excellent magic stuff. It reminded me of a kids version of The Rook, with a secret government agency charged with dealing with magical/supernatural phenomena. I think it would also be a perfect suggestion for any Harry Potter fans. And while I loved all the magic stuff, my favorite part is Amari and her new best friend who is a WEREDRAGON what a delight.
