Meh - I know this book got a lot of praise, but I just found it overly complex & wordy most of the time.

Stacy Abrams can really do it all!
I’m not one for political thrillers, and I know nothing of law or chess, so I think I may have been a bit out of my depth with this one. I think I would have given it more stars if I understood it more. But it was definitely a thrilling mystery!
It starts off a little confusing, but once you know who the characters are, what’s going on, and how everything is connected, IT’S GOOD. A solid read. I do think I’d appreciate it more as a mini-series or a TV movie. I’m imagining some intense theme music…

This book sees the clerk of a Supreme Court justice go into action, investigating things, when the justice she clerks for dies an unexpected death. This results is quite the investigation, travelling up and down the East Coast gathering clues that only she, and the judge's son, can comprehend.
Stacey Abrams says she had difficulty getting the book published, because people “would have difficulty believing the premise.” Well, I’m sorry, but no. I can think of a similar book, that became a significant film, with exactly the same premise. The problem wasn’t credibility. It was that it wasn’t very good. I honestly believe that this wouldn’t have been published if this wasn’t written by Ms Abrams.

What a roller coaster of a ride! This book captured my attention immediately and it was difficult to put down. Avery Keene is a Supreme Court law clerk who is surprisingly appointed as legal guardian for the judge she works for when he falls into a coma. She teams up with the judge's estranged son, the judge's lawyer, and her physician resident roommate to investigate and solve the multi-layered mystery. This book involves international intrigue, government corruption, puzzles, chess, and so much more. It is a very intelligent, edge-of-your-seat thriller. I have no idea when Stacey Abrams has time to write novels, but am so glad that she does!!
