Well, hot damn. Do yourself a favor and read everything Casey McQuiston has written and will write. It feels like this book was written especially for me. McQuiston always manages to tell the truth about people and make everyone’s hearts just explode with joy and love. I also laugh out loud a lot reading all of their books. All the stars for this book.

I Kissed Shara Wheeler is a perfectly fine book. I LOVED Red, White, & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, thought One Last Stop was fine, and now I have finally caught up on all of this author's books and my final opinion on I Kissed Shara Wheeler was okay.

I will admit that I was really excited about this one when it originally came out, but then I got distracted by other books and this one fell to the wayside until I listened to the audiobook through Libby. This seemed like the perfect book for me. It is about a queer, academic over-achiever from a small southern town. Should be perfect for me right? I think it would have really hit hard for me if I had read it when I was in high school, sadly I just didn't love it at this point in my life.

There wasn't a single character that I really loved or sympathized with. I also can't get over the fact that this book is essentially Faberry fan fiction lol. I thought Chloe was annoying and high strung and very self-centered. Shara was, even more, self-centered and was clearly supposed to be the modern-day manic pixie dream girl a la Margo Roth Spigelman from Paper Towns.

I will applaud all of the small-town-isms. Those, I really enjoyed. They felt like little inside jokes and made my little inner high school self feel seen.

After reading this, I'm wondering if RWARB/Casey McQuiston is a one-off for me. I'll probably read whatever they write next because I always enjoy their writing to a degree, but I haven't loved any of their work quite like I loved RWARB.
