The Time Machine

H.G. Wells, H.G. Wells

3.62 AVERAGE

Under the hazy gaslights of Victorian London, an inventor has a few of his friends around as he discusses the theory of Time Travel as they drink together. Not only that but he's built a machine, and he will be the world's first Time Traveller.

Written in 1895, the theories suggested in this book were ahead of their time, and though flawed by today's reckonings, were quite influential in striking up an infinity of possibilities, sparking imagination of so many writers, and setting the sci-fi literary world on fire.

I'm sure we've all seen the movie - or possibly the Wishbone episode ;) - so we probably all have a general idea of what happens in this book, but it still did manage to surprise me a bit. The tone is surprisingly modern for a book written over a hundred years ago and [unfortunately] the social commentary is just as relevant today as I assume it was at that time. Definitely a short read but also a good one and I especially liked his detailed descriptive language, which made it very easy to picture the world as I was reading.

It is a short book, but it was still hard for me to get through. Interesting and such a different picture of the future that the first time travel book presents. I did like the ending though.

i read war of the worlds a couple of years ago, for the very first time, and was shocked at how good it was, but also at how intense the story is when entirely lacking in any sort of modern conveniences. i had grown up with the story, and all of its permutations and adaptations, so the original surprised me with its simplicity and effectiveness.

this surprised me in a different way, as i realized that i am more familiar with other stories that were spawned from this book, or the general ideas herein -- ray bradbury and malcom macdowell pop to mind -- so when i started reading i was startled to discover that i had no idea what would happen next.

I think what made me like this book was the style H.G Wells wrote it. It feels like you are in the room and the main character is telling you the story one on one.

P.S: Just let him finish the story without intterupting
