I would have finished this book much, much, much sooner if I hadn’t been dealing with health issues and small children. I have never read The Island of Doctor Moreau but I love that Silvia Moreno-Garcia took one genre and story then created a whole new story with a beautiful blend of genres. She’s excellent at creating these unique stories with a familiar feel to them. The book tells the story of a young girl who helps her father with his scientific studies without knowing all that he is truly doing as well as that of a young man who comes into the doctor and his daughter’s life when she was but a girl. Each does as the doctor’s tells them until one day it all comes to a very catastrophic head. All set in Mexico, Carlotta, Montgomery, and the hybrids must figure not only who they are but also what.

Excellent idea and execution. HG wells eat your heart out. Looking at that story through a woman’s eyes and colonization felt essential. It was bold and mysterious. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t see the twist coming, though it was right there in my face. While I always prefer happily ever afters, this story was told how it would more likely happen and I think it’s a great story to stay up all night and enjoy. Highly recommend!

This is a good reimagining of The Island of Doctor Moreau. Unfortunately for me, it felt a bit repetitive and moralistically heavy-handed, and I wasn't a fan of the audiobook narration. To each their own!

TW/CW: Murder, death, injury, sex, body horror
REVIEW: The Daughter of Doctor Moreau is a modern retelling of The Island of Doctor Moreau. Although I have not read the earlier book, this book works perfectly fine as a standalone story.
The book follows Carlota, the daughter of the Doctor, who lives with her father and the hybrid creatures that he has created in his lab.
Honestly, I was a little disappointed by this book. Not a lot happened, and the big reveal that was supposed to be a surprise was something I figured out just a couple of chapters in. The writing is good, and it’s not a bad book. It has a lot of great atmosphere and the characters are interesting and well written. The plot simply seemed pretty slow to me and there wasn’t really a big climax or anything surprising that happened during the story.
I’m not sure I’d actually recommend this book, but other people might enjoy reading it.
