This was an extremely challenging book to finish- I paused twice to gain some level of strength and tolerance to deal with how the MC interacted with her own history and emotions- later with others. Very deep

I quite liked it. Tightly written. I knew a major spoiler going in, but even so, there was a lot of foreshadowing, so I could enjoy the story with that additional perspective.

I especially liked the book’s portrayal of Celeste’s traumas from her childhood and young adult days, and the effects they’ve had on her as an adult. How she goes from desperately not wanting to be alone, to finding solace in her solitude, before she can get maintain a romantic relationship — it was thoughtfully portrayed.

I thought the book was a mystery/thriller when I first picked it up, so I was surprised when it turned out to be a more reflective romance. The mystery elements weren’t too strong.

Wasn’t the biggest fan of
her happily ever after with Olivia given Olivia’s odd power dynamic with her during the bulk of their romance. But I could still close an eye and suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy the book.

As this book went along I started getting apprehensive. I think I was reading it to soon after readIng Sandra Morans “State do Grace”. This could be a difficult read but I kept plugging away hoping for a happy ending.

I enjoyed it like I do all of Noyes books that I’ve read. There are difficult parts in all of them but the ending has always been worth the it.

Compelling as shit to read but I absolutely despised the quote unquote romance. No fucking THANK you. The extremity of the power imbalance and the pretense made the sex akin to rape in my estimation. I was actively rooting against them in the end. I wanted it to turn into a full-on revenge fantasy. But alas, it did not, so here we are. Whooo I am seriously steamed right now.
