The third book in the series felt quieter and more self-analyzed, which actually worked really well since this one was more focused on Blue. It didn't hit as hard as the second one, but honestly, that felt intentional. Blue’s strength is more in subtle moments and quiet resistance than big, dramatic scenes.
Adam’s development really stood out to me. Him realizing that his friends don’t pity him was a huge emotional moment. It added a lot of depth to his character. And okay, I knew Adam was smart, but I did not expect him to realize that Ronan might fancy him?! That was such a soft, surprising little detail, and I loved how Stiefvater handled it, no drama, just this quiet awareness building between them.
Also those late night phone calls between Blue and Gansey??? The pining, the tension, the sweetness!
And I really loved the random, cute moments between Blue and Ronan. Their friendship is truly underrated.
That said... the beginning felt slow.... again and the magic system still kind of just… happens. You’re not really meant to question it too hard, which works for the mood, but sometimes I wanted just a little more structure.
Greenmantle wasn’t what I expected at all. He was more sarcastic than scary, and I kept waiting for him to become the real threat Mr. Gray made him out to be, but he never quite got there. Piper, though? Totally different story. I didn’t expect her to be so violent and unpredictable. Honestly, she ended up being more terrifying than Greenmantle ever was.
The Professor was charming but didn’t feel super important, plot-wise. And I really wish we saw more of the women at Fox Way. The random cousins popping in later on surprised me, it would’ve been nice to have them show up or be mentioned earlier, just to make that feel more natural.

realistically one of these books is five stars for me but i don’t know which one it is and i feel too generous giving it to all of them so they’re all getting 4.5 for now
Almost 4 years later everything that I wrote then, stands!
It did not really take me over a week to finish it. I just didn't want to finish it so I merely put it aside in hopes I can forget about it and possibly not go through terrible withdrawals as I await book 4 to come out. No such luck, my friends. It's impossible to stay away for longer than just a couple of days and provided you have other distractions to keep your mind occupied.
It was an absolutely gorgeous book. I love the progress, the character development, their collective and individual journeys and how they are expressed through flawless writing. The combination of the above is enchanting. I could never ask for more of a fantasy YA author such as Maggie. Her creation sends shivers down my spine. In all the good and terrifying ways.
Also, guys, let's repeat our mantra words: SOMEONE SAVE GANSEY, OKAY?! Someone has to. The world will stop spinning if he dies. I'm quite certain of it. Gansey. CANNOT. Die.
