One of the most agonizing books I've read AND ITS ONLY 50 PAGES. Usually it only takes less than two hours for me to read 50 pages(depending on the book) but this took me three days. Anyways I really hope that the movie is better. On a better note I have completed my challenge of reading one stephen King book this year so no more of his books until 2024.

I'm from the UK, I know thats not an excuse not to research stuff, but I have no idea what Nebraska is like. From reading this, I get the image of a sort of desert-y type place, with flat heat, but enough good soil for farming, especially corn. I honestly have no idea what it's really like, but that's what my brain conjures up.

I felt the desolation of Gatlin when I read this. It felt almost like it was separated from the rest of Nebraska simply by 'being.' I don't even know if that makes sense but that's how it made me feel. It was also a perfect reflection of the marriage of Vicki and Burton- flat and empty. Except it wasn't. Gatlin, that is.

I've never watched the film (surprise surprise) but I have seen the memes and the pictures and the kids in my brain are much more freaky. Which probably says more about me than anything else. The whole story completely freaked me out. I don't know if it's because the kids were so blatantly murderous and batshit crazy, if it was because it was some weird sort of cult or what it was but it freaked the shit out of me.

I don't think the marriage would've survived outside Gatlin, unless they'd both survived the horror of the town in some spectacular way - perhaps that might have been something that brought them together, made them stronger. But once Burt got out of that car, that was it, it was done I think. They were just both so stubborn.

There's a very deep religious theme here. I know I'm stating the obvious saying that. I don't know what the significance of the corn was other than that it was significant to them. And that's what's scary - the out of context Scripture that can be seen as in context if you so desire it to be. The structure of religion where He Who Walks Behind The Rows can become a god to a cult of children or the devil to anyone looking in.

There is a difference between religion and faith, and there will always be conflicting views and beliefs. When does it become dangerous? Is it when sacrifices are demanded? When people try to control others? When a group of kids kill the adults? Or is it when we see what we want to see and do what we want to do in the name of whoever or whatever we believe in?
