I love the cleopatra storyline.
But omg Inez is the most gullible, dumbest, unless FMC.
She made the whole story more whiny and annoying

Whit is gross and while it was nice to listen to his POV, hes sucky

And I get that inez is bad at everything, but for real how do they always know exactly what she is thinking.
Like for real a few times I can understand, but every time.

I'' not sure how to feel about this book. I almost stopped reading about half way through bc Inez was just being so trusting and naive that it was hard to root for her 😭 I know she was grieving but she was being tricked and taken advantage of left and right. I want a MC that thinks before she acts/ I wish whit would too. He was usually the one thinking things through but he kinda just does things in this book bc love ig. Also they bring up
Elviras death so often. With like graphic descriptions. I found it kind of tiresome to have her keep saying the same/similar thing about how whit betrayed her / stole her fortune but she still wanted him nonetheless. I don't think we really got a built up version of trust between them. Just a I would die for you so pls trust that I love you even though he was so cold to her in the beginning. I think the stark change in vibe made them a bit of a hard sell. Just wondering what the time line was also bc they have been waiting to send Elviras body back to Argentina.
I do want to say I love the way they speak out against the  injustices  of racism and corruption,as well as the effects colonization has of pre-existing societies.

This feels like a Western – but set in Egypt and infused with magic. Sadly, the library is barely mentioned. The protagonists throw themselves wildly into danger with very poor decision making, yet somehow everything works out.

Shortly before starting WtLH, I read other reviews and it made me a little nervous about what this story would look like. But I quite liked the it and felt like Ibañez wrapped everything up well.

One of the chief complaints that I read is that Inez, who is supposed to be quite intelligent, is so easily duped by Whit, especially. But in hindsight I think it makes sense. While Inez is very intelligent, she has also been pretty sheltered and nearly every important relationship she's had has involved abandonment or betrayal. So, to me, it makes sense that Inez would be so trusting and naive because, it seems like, she's acting out of an anxious attachment style. Whit on the other hand seems to have an avoidant style, but seems to come to a more secure place by the end of the book.

All that to say, I really enjoyed the conclusion to this story line and the character growth that occurred. I felt that the characters were well conceived and consistent, even as they developed. I was surprised by some of the plot twists and while a few things felt cheesy it never felt like too much. This series would be excellent for folks that love historical fiction, historical romance, or action-adventures.
