Nothing made sense. The timeline in this book completely contradicts book #1. I was hoping the magic system and motives would be better fleshed out here, but the author didn't bother. (Literally what are her parents motives? If they wanted money, why let Inez inherit their fortune? So completely implausible.)
Inez was annoyingly naive in the first book, but I hoped she'd grow from the way that ended. But it's worse now - as if she learned nothing. And the author keeps giving us a peek into Inez's predictable, shallow and selfish inner thoughts. Is this what the author thinks teenagers are like?
The female audiobook narrator is still using a horrible cockney accent for the supposedly aristocratic male lead. Not to mention how incredibly out of place the whole plot is for the time period. It's like no one involved in this production even researched this facet of history--like they just watched The Mummy and maybe some snippets of the History channel and called it good.

A worthy follow up to What The River Knows. Twists and turns all the way through with a satisfying ending. The descriptions are excellent all the way through, you can really feel like you're walking with Inez and Whit through Shepheards Hotel and along the streets of Alexandria. The epilogue is brilliant as well, the pictures of the characters are exactly as I imagined them.
Moderate: Gun violence, Infidelity, Violence, Kidnapping, Death of parent, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
