This was kinda awful, the only reason I didn't give it 1⭐ was because the beginning was quite nice, I liked the descriptions of the moor and the new environment that she had to deal with, the book had one or two good moments and some characters were quite sweet but BOY OH BOY did I not manage to care. The longer it went on, the more it seemed to drag on and I almost dnf'ed because I just hoped it would finally be over soon. I also felt like it became more repetitive the longer it went on. Even as I skipped through the last pages I STILL saw descriptions of how hungry the kids were now. I GET IT, THEY HAVE A GREAT APPETITE NOW AND ARE SO HEALTHY AND HAPPY and bla bla bla. The end could have been much shorter and still expressed the same message. Besides, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't as mysterious as I hoped it would be, even for a children's book. Over all I was very bored, unfortunately.

Very good story. The ending was beautiful, although I wish there was a little more about Mary towards the end, I feel like the author forgot about her being the main character.

It was on my classic list. I read it. That is all.

Oh how I wish I had read this as a child. I think it would have shaped me in the best way. I think it’s a life changing book - not in a big way but in lots of small ways. I mean to let it change me in so many small ways that perhaps it will not matter that I read it as an adult and not a child.

I think I actually absorbed maybe 70% of this; I'm very bad at listening to audiobooks. Struck by all the environmental racism as well as the really well-rounded, complex children in the novel. Hodgson-Burnett has a real talent for description, and her narrator has a charming personality and perspective that doesn't supercede the actual story. The audiobook narrator also did a great job.
