This was one of those classics I thought might be over hyped and not for me, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. I liked how it shows that people can change if given the right environment and reasons. Also really liked how Mrs. Burnett showed how important nature and exercise are to life because it was a different message for the time when it was written. I read it when I was 10 years old but didn't know if I truly enjoyed it when I was younger. Somehow I think that I understood and enjoyed it more when I was older since I understood the references and could easily pick up on the hidden messages hidden within the novel. I'm definitely glad I got this book when I was younger; honestly got it because of the cover art since it matched the style of my copy of "A Little Princess."

It is a really beautiful book that displays how important nature connection is to our health. I love an author who can name a specific bird species and just the descriptions of spring were so vivid. It felt even more meaningful given how old the book is (1911?) that the skylarks are still doing their same song and dance and the daffodils and snowdrops are still popping out through the frost. It just gave me so much hope at nature’s resilience and how it continues its routine year on year in the face of adversity. It made me realise I need to find more books where nature is a character.

The main deduction for me is for the phonetically written Yorkshire accents which was oof, hard to read - especially when all the main characters were picking up the accent! It really slowed down my reading comprehension which given that the pace already felt quite slow, made getting through some of it feel like it was an age! Also the racism was oof at the start and is obviously of its time, that was only really present in the first third.

I wish I read then when I was an 8 year old, comic loving yet still loved going outside girl. Not now, as the 18 year old who is very quiet, never goes outside as much anymore, and never understanding the world around me. That's what 8 year old and 18 year old me have in common anyways- We can never understand the world.

It's Gentle, Magical, and Quietly profound. But I'm too old now to fully fall under it's spell.

A beautiful, comforting read. Elizabeth reads it fantastically.
