Might be a precursor to the cozy fantasy genre. We get to see through a garden and the different children we meet how the most important thing is the love of a mother or lack there of, and how the children fair in each situation. I only wish we spent more time just looking at the flowers.

i did enjoy this but i didn’t feel that connected to the characters. i thought their growth throughout the book was great but overall, there was just something missing.

I like the beautiful descriptions of nature - not sure I appreciated it as a child. And the appreciation for the spring, and growth of new life. The book has dated - all the parts referring to India are quite condescending and it all smacks of the colonialism of the time. But in a broad sense, a lovely book.
