Unlike my Percy Jackson review, it's not nostalgia that's making me give this book five starts.
It's just a good book.
Okay, maybe some nostalgia and childhood memories are making me blind but I genuinely think everybody should read this book once, child or adult. It doesn't matter. it's a good book, and I wish more people would know about it. Everyone's seen the film but not read the book, and it's a bit infuriating, but that's not what this review is about. Everything about this book is fantastic. The characters, the setting, the humour, it's way above the age range, it's set for, and I can't think of a better children's fantasy series.

... you only had to look into his big, innocent, heavily lashed eyes to realise that he was totally without morals. The eyes were ancient, the eyes of a killer. You might as well ask a crocodile or a shark to be your friend.
characterising pre-ego toddlers as firebreathing reptiles is still pretty funny. i am never having kids.
i might be mis-remembering later books, but i think you can draw a straight line from toothless/furious/wodensfang to freud's id/ego/super-ego.
the whole time i was reading i had that Edna Mode quote from Incredibles 2 ping-ponging around my head that goes "Done properly, parenting is a heroic act... DONE. PROPERLY."

Having watched the films I wanted to read the book. I really enjoyed it, the plot is completely different to the film but I think it’s a great story especially reading it with a familiarity to the characters for the film.
