Caldecott Honor 1971 - This one is a bit strange for my taste.

I like that there is cake for everyone in the morning (if only that were real life), but this really wasn't the best children's book I've ever read. Plus, the boy is naked, so that might bother you.

A big favorite of mine to read aloud, this book reads like spoken word poetry. We love to yell "Milk in the batter! Milk in the batter! We bake cake and nothing's the matter!"

It's funny to me how many people commented on the naked thing. I barely noticed, my two boys (4&5) didn't comment at all.
adventurous lighthearted fast-paced

We borrowed this book from the library so many times, that finally Grandma Bev bought us a copy.

This story has so much charm and magic, and as always with Sendak, the language just begs to be read aloud. The rhythm and flow of the words are just as magical as the story itself.

What a fucking weirdly dark book? not my favorite. Nothing like reading this story and wondering, wait are they—are they going to eat the child? It’s so weird when they tried to bake him. I did enjoy Mickey building a plane out of bread and soaring up the night sky to get the milk. Other than that? Didn't really like it.

I can't believe I've never read In the Night Kitchen before and I'm so glad I finally did. It was a fantastically fun imaginative romp and I loved every minute of it. If you like this one, be sure to read We Are All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy; the artwork is very similar. I checked this unadulterated copy out from the Mississippi Library Commission.

What a strange dream. I really don't understand it. I think Mickey went to bed hungry and that's why he dreamed about cake. Just strange. This was a Caldecott Honor book in 1971.

One of my all-time favorite books when I was a kid. Every child should have a copy of this.

Silly book.
