I though this book was okay. The characters have a little more depth than the usual McCaffrey cut-out, but I don't think that the Robinton portrayed in this story is the Robinton that we see in the rest of the series. I just ignored the fact that they were supposed to be the same person and just went along with the story. There are some huge time jumps as well that I wish had been fleshed out a bit more. But overall I'd say it's better than at least half of the other Pern books in the series so far.

This was good but i found the very end to be a little silly and unnecessary.

This book was full of action, and a complete roller coaster of emotions. I hadn't realized I cared about the characters until events happened. A page turner, covering (sometimes summarizing) the years of a single character's life. Always interesting to see different points of view in this fantastic world.

Robinton is the greatest. I just can't say enough about him.

I'm waffling a bit on whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. McCaffrey is an excellent author and her Pern series are well developed and enjoyed by legions of fantasy readers. Not being much of a fantasy reader, I thought I would give this audio book a try since it sounded interesting and would make for a good listen while working around the house.
Basically, if someone is looking for a book that is all about one character and his growth from childhood to older adult with light, frothy events, then they will like this book. There is a light touch of tension throughout with normal, personal type problems and situations but overall this is a long, drawn out story that brings a different look at the social makeup of Pern. I found myself waiting for some backbone, some intensity, some emotional growth/discovery with the main character but nope.
This was the audio book (bought on sale) and I must say the narrator was very good.
