My husband often says that I'd read any book with a dog on the cover. That's not entirely accurate, but a book about a hiking dog I'm sure to read (or listen).

Atticus was an amazing dog who accomplished what most people dream of doing in The Whites. It was great to read about Atticus on the trail and how he was no ones dog but his own. The scene with the 2 French-Canadian hikers making fun of Atticus but turning back before the summit while 20 pound Atticus powered on definitely made me laugh.

However, the author had a strange repetitiveness in his writing. Not just in his descriptions, but just whole phrases being repeated a few pages later. It's off putting.

I suppose I wasn't drawn in enough during the autobiographical parts to really enjoy the story.

3 stars.

I did find out that Atticus died a few days ago, rest in peace little dog.

A really heart-felt story about a man and the amazing perspectives on life that the animals we love give us. This story includes enjoyable adventures, inspiring people and emotional moments. A great read for those who love nature and dogs. Only 4/5 because some chapters could drag and chapters tended to end with the same types of sentences. Otherwise a very fun read.

My all time favorite author! This story was written about a little schnauzer who hiked with Tom Ryan up all the mountain peaks in Hew Hampshire. It was an adventure and I felt like I was hiking the mountains with Tom Ryan and his dog Atticus.
