The main character is definitely an authorial self insert and the characterization feels very dated to the era it was written, but... I have to admit it was a lot of fun to read and I was hooked by the suspense. A bit like potato chips for the brain.

Detailed and rich in its painting of an alternative history, Fatherland is more interesting for its geekery that it is for its storyline - which is ultimately average.

This is my second encounter with Robert Harris, and the second time I’ve felt that the plot runs out of room and/or steam just when things are getting interesting.

A good and straightforward read and the premise of following a fairly ordinary and junior officer through an alternative history of Nazi rule was an interesting lens through which to tell this story.
