It's amazing how much intricate detail Harris has put into the descriptions, and he manages to make alternate ending and fates of non-fictional characters plausible. Best of all, with this book my love for detective stories has returned.
I read this book for a book club in February, although due to the snow it ended up getting rescheduled to a time I couldn't attend. The book takes place in an alternate history where the Germans have won World War II and Hitler is still in power many years later. For most of the book, this annoyed me, because there didn't seem to be any reason for this change. Even after finding out the reason behind this at the end (which I won't spoil, because it basically would answer the mystery the main character needs to solve throughout the book), I'm still not sure that a similar conspiracy couldn't have been dreamed up in a world like ours where Hitler did not win. The book was actually pretty good - I didn't guess the mystery or the plot twist (actually I was quite surprised by the latter!), which is always refreshing. And the main character was interesting. It was a pretty fast read - two session of a few hours each and I was done. I'd recommend it if you are looking for something a little different.
This is an interesting and unusual detective novel, set in an alternative reality where the Nazis have won WW2. It is set in Berlin in 1964 and recounts how a member of the criminal police, unconvincingly (for what is supposed to be a German) called Xavier March, investigates the mysterious death of a Nazi bigwig. The investigation soon reveals that the dead man participated at the Wannsee Conference in 1942, whose significance is not publicly known in the alternative reality of the novel. Slowly the investigator, together with an American journalist, uncovers that the purpose of the Wannsee Conference was to decide upon and plan the ‘Final Solution for the Jewish Question’. Rather than the detective chasing the criminal, the roles are reversed as the Nazi Party leadership catches on to the fact that they are about to be unmasked, and they set the Gestapo on to March. Eventually the American journalist manages to smuggle hitherto suppressed documentary evidence of the ‘Final Solution’ out of Germany, presumably so that it can finally be published.
Although well conceived and written, I have major issues with this novel. I’m not convinced that fiddling with history in this way, even in a work of fiction, is a good idea, especially now (the book was first published in 1992) that there are people who deny that the holocaust actually took place. Also I have reservations about the suggestion that the average German (or world citizens for that matter) didn’t know about the ‘Final Solution’, even in an alternative reality scenario. It puts into question Germany’s and the World’s complicity in the near-annihilation of the Jewish people by the Nazis and their helpers in WW2, about which there should be absolutely no question in anyone’s mind!

This is a very easy book to read. It does start quite slow but picks up around midway. The plot veers off into a new direction later in the book with the last 10% of the book being quite dramatic and spell binding. For those interested in German history, this book will likely leave them wanting for more.

בקצרה העלילה מתרחשת בשנת 1964 במציאות אלטרנטיבית בה הנאצים ניצחו כבשו את מרבית אירופה והמדינות שנותרו הן מדינות חסות. אמריקה לכאורה ליברלית וחופשית ובפועל נשלטת על ידי נשיא בעייתי משהו. בברלין, קצין משטרה מוצא גופה של בכיר לשעבר במשטר הנאצי ומכאן מתחיל מסע מתגלגל של חשיפת האמת, יחד עם עיתונאית אמריקאית, כאשר הוא נאבק בבכירי האס אס, שמבקשים לקבור את הסיפור וגם אותו.
לא ממש נהנתי מהספר. מאה העמודים הראשונים איטיים ולא מותחים ממש, אחר כך זה השתפר.
אני מאוד אוהב היסטוריה אלטרנטיבית אבל בעיני גם בחלק הזה הספר לוקה בעיקר משני טעמים:
הספר ממוקם בשנת 1964 הסיבה לכך, היא הרצון של הסופר לקחת דמויות אמיתיות ולדמיין מה היה קורה לו היו נשארות בחיים (והנאצים היו מנצחים) בעוד שזה מעניין זה לא ממש מצית את הדימיון. נדמה לי שבכל משחק דמיוני מה היה קורה אילו, התסריט הזה הוא התסריט הסביר ביותר.
שנית, כמעט כל העלילה מתרחשת במיקרוקוסמוס של ברלין, אז כן היא שינתה את פניה עם מבנים אדירים אבל גם פה הדמיון מוגבל שלא לומר כלוא בגבולות העיר.
