If there is one thing that i take away from this book then it is the atmosphere the author creates. Fatherland, simply put is a well crafted thriller in the lines of the ludlum/forsyth thrillers of yore sans the blood and gore. Interestingly enough I had given up my interest on political thrillers until this tale gave me a fresh view.
While studying the history of WWII, any over imaginative mind would ponder the question : "What would have happened had Germany won the war ? ". It could have been an empire of monstrous proportions, in more ways than one. It is in such a victorious Germany that Robert Harris plants his tale of murder, greed and conspiracy in the highest places. The gray, brooding and altogether sinister atmosphere of a totalitarian nation state hangs in the words of the author. From the Anne Frank diaries and Schindler's list, i think i had a fair enough understanding of the holocaust horrors but then the author terrifies and surprises with the scenes that he weaves as part of his yarn. The corruption moral, social and financial seems to grow like fungi in every pore of this garangtuan enterprise and is captured well with the author's words.
Recommended for all those interested in alternate history and with a taste for a good political thriller

Well, I definitely have a penchant for novels about individuals struggling against totalitarian societies. Nevertheless, this was a brilliant thriller, set against the background of a Germany that won the second World War. The author doesn't spend a lot of set-up time explaining the world he's creating; the historical facts flow naturally through the storytelling. The detective weaves his way through corruption, propaganda, deceit and betrayal to find the heart of the reason behind a series of murders of Party officials. I blasted through this book in about a day, and will definitely read it again.

I don’t love thrillers, but this was interesting from the nazi angle / alt history.
