I wanted to read this book when it came out as I enjoy reading about WW2 especially about the holocaust and Hitler, but I never got round to it. By chance it was recommended to me recently so I thought I would give it a go and I'm glad I did. It took me about 60 pages to get really into it but by then I couldn't put it down, it was great. I would love to read more of his books.
This book had so much potential, but other than the setting, which was well researched and well created, it was a typically boring detective novel. I wouldn't bother.

Wow
That ending is so apt and yet so unfulfilling
With everything that had come before, I don't think there was a resolution possible that would have felt justified.
On one hand, I do enjoy the way Harris introduces the real "crime" that's being investigated. On the other, I was hoping for a mystery/thriller that simply uses a post-1945 Nazi Germany as a backdrop.
This being Harris' commentary on WWII is less interesting to me than seeing a jobbing copper trying to serve justice within the bounds of a totalitarian regime.

I immediately found the basic idea of the book extremely intriguing, because as a German, I have asked myself quite a couple of times how history could’ve turned out if the Allies hadn’t won World War 2 and Hitler had never been defeated. What is more, Nazi Germany/ World War 2 probably is the historical era about half of the books I have ever read have been set in due to my interest in everything surrounding these horrible and influential years, so I haven’t hesitated to give this book a chance.
It has been interesting and I don’t regret picking it up, that’s for sure, but I don’t think the book’s flawless either. For example, I did not really think the romance present in this book is necessarily at all as the historical secrets unraveled should be captivating enough for any reader to keep reading; but I can see that it might add something to the plot for some, so I don’t really mind.
Regarding the vision of alternative Germany that is presented in the book, I believe that it is quite realistic and therefore frightening- especially the way the Holocaust is treated by the government in this book made me think quite a lot about how astonishing it is that after years of non-disclosure and silence, knowledge about these historical events is seen as vital and important in Germany today. All in all, this is one of the books that made me appreciate how lucky I can be to live in the world, reality and time I live in.
