This story is touching, morbidly sad, incredibly funny, but overall reflects the human soul perfectly: how possessions can consume us, how important money and status are in this world.
The way Gogol introduces us to the story, making fun of Akaky Akakievich at first, ridiculing his name, telling us of his shabby living conditions, then making us appreciate him by showing us how his colleagues make fun of him, left me awestruck.
The story’s narration is nothing short of impressive, as it’s written from a kind of unreliable first-person narrator’s point of view; the narrator surely isn’t omniscient, as they, at times, seem to have just heard of Akaky Akakievich’s story, with a lack of some general information: “Akaky Akakievich was born toward nightfall, if my memory does not deceive me, on the twenty-third of March”, to just give one example. Then again, the narrator seems to be all-seeing; as if they’d been there all this time, had been just beside Akaky Akakievich all his life, and, simply for fun, decided to not give the reader important information: “In the department of … but I had better not mention which department.”
I’m still on a quest to find out why Russian (or, in this case, Ukrainian-born) writers are so great, and reading this story definitely got me a step closer to finally cracking the puzzle.

Oh this went absolutely the fuck off. Excellent critique of the dehumanization that comes with capitalism and I'm glad he returned to haunt their asses in the end.
