After having read Manacled, I thought maybe I’d be prepared for this - I was wrong. Somebody sedate me.

I am devasated and heartbroken! I knew exactly how this story would go but it still really got me.
I personally struggled with the world building in the beginning but once I made it through it was hard to put down (except when I needed a break).
However this is not soft or fluffy. It's dark and you should really read all content warnings before starting!

not a single note. This absolutely destroyed me in the best way possible
edit (again) (final one i promise): i deleted all the comments on this post. i'm sick of having the same conversation 10 times over. coming after my age and intelligence because i 1 starred your favorite fanfic is not an argument.
note to myself because my memory is bad and that is why i started Goodreads in the 1st place: marked as never reading for problematic depictions of rape, abuse, and plagiarism.

This shouldn’t have been published, let alone have a movie deal or be a best seller. Out side of its problematic origins 10% in it is one of the more upsetting books I’ve read in my life time, it’s like the author said hey let’s take the handmaids tale make it 1000+ pages, then set in a world this is reminiscent of and containing of one of magic systems in mistborn (Hemalurgy aka the one that in that book series is deemed inherently evil) and make it a romance. I’ve read dark books before but there’s normally a point, a light at the end of the tunnel but I can’t see that one here, the only thing it reminds me of is A Little Life which functions on the central thesis that some people should just end it all. The one thing I will give this book credit for its convincing me not to be charitable and not to reserve judgement in the future. It has also taught me that I should probably steer clear penguin random house, which has lead me to cancel several preorders.
