It’s hard to put into words how I feel after reading this book. This was a masterclass in human emotion. An unrelenting roller coaster.

I don't know how to rate this. I am so conflicted, it's not bad, the prose is nice and certain plot points and emotional beats were there, but it has a lot of flaws. The pacing was punishing especially in Part 1, it got better in Part 2, and then became punishingly and anxiety inducing in Part 3—which I'm sure was intentional but the Editor needed to have the hard conversation of "Perhaps you need to cut this for clarity, readability, and so the plot is more tidy/makes more sense."
Full disclosure: I haven't read Manacled and when I started it I didn't even know it was primarily based on that. (This changed quickly but I still went in blind.)
EDIT: The more I take my time and digest this the more I find that I'm liking it. Again, it is flawed and it deals with very dark materials but never glorifies them. What a journey.
