Writing of the author is modern thought with inappropriate aspects of love at that time.

Why did I even pick this up? I found an old (1930s?) copy in real good shape at the Booksale, and knew it was an "important" book, so I grabbed it for $2.50. It had been sitting around on my physical " to read " shelf for awhile and was finally selected, as are so many of my choices, by perceived level of commitment. Its a small book, not very tall or thick, so i thought it would make a nice quick read. That must be some thin paper -- it turned out to be almost 500 pages of fine print :-)

I'm not sure what I was expecting, maybe something a bit more soap opera like? I wasn't reading it for scandal -- I didn't expect anything written 100 years ago to really surprise me in that way. But scandal seems to go hand in hand with soap opera, so i guess i had pigeon-holed based on that. But I was quite surprised at the depth of character exploration. This is not a story you read for plot. Nothing exciting happens. Things happen, they just aren't exciting. The central idea of the story is the debilitating mother-son relationship of the main characters. I found it to be quite well done in that the mother is portrayed as a complex character, with her own needs given an honest weight. She isn't just a caricature of an overbearing or smothering mother. Although the outcome of her laser focus on her son is disastrous, you are able to understand its source. Mind you, understand does not presume forgiveness.

As for the supporting characters: the love interests Miriam and Clara were a clever juxtaposition of black and white, angel and devil, Madonna and whore.... Neither of them satisfied Paul. Personally, I think he would have been a happy soul with some sort of blend of the two, and I'm not sure why I felt like the author was saying there was no one in the world for Paul. Does the author feel that women are one or the other, no continuum? Or is Paul thinking that?

But I think one of my favorite (in that I enjoyed the portrayal, not the person) was Paul's father. That was another deftly handled complex person that could have easily fallen into caricature but didn't.

Read this for thought, not plot. And be prepared to struggle a bit with dialect and outdated euphemisms. But go ahead and give it a try!
