Sons and Lovers

D. H. Lawrence

Sons, lovers, muerte, y poca terapia.

Why people didn't enjoy this book is beyond me, for I was immediately hooked from the first chapter. I happened to read this novel in huge chunks at a time and I believe it's because while it could be a little hard to get through, the imagery and relationships were just so fascinating, putting down the book was harder than usual. Although by the end of the book I was fed up with Paul's antics, I fell in love with Miriam, and for some reason will always relate to her and Paul's relationship. Something about Miriam makes me very glad to have read this book. Thanks English Novel.

“You're always begging things to love you as if you were a beggar for love. Even the flowers, you have to fawn on them— ... You don't want to love – your eternal and abnormal craving is to be loved. You aren't positive, you're negative. You absorb, absorb, as if you must fill yourself up with love, because you've got a shortage somewhere.”

It is a psychological drama about a man whose relationship with women are complicated by the intimacy with his own mother. DH Lawrence has written the most compelling descriptions of various human emotions, spirituality and difficulties of love and passion.

it has taken me so long to finish this book that i have lost a huge part of its momentum. however, i have enjoyed this very much and i think Lawrence's realism is majestic. will be reading more of his work soon

Essentially this stretches a working family's life into epic proportions, giving minutia and emotions scope. The main focus is on the son Paul Morrel, who is caught between his mother and his lover, Miriam, and the emotional tug and pull that that causes.

Meh.

The writing is great and I really enjoyed learning about the family and their internal conflicts in the beginning, but as the story stretched on and on and on, I grew tired of it. It was too long, too meandering, and I only finished it because it was on audio book and I needed something to listen to on the way to work.
