Had to read in school. I still remember one sentence that struck me then. It wasn't as offensive as others of his that I had to read turned out to be. So, two stars.
This book is precisely what the title beckons you to believe, with layers of Oedipal issues and challenges braided into its narrative. Despite how interesting that makes the book seem, it really isn't all that. It has its moments, but I did not find it a spectacular read. I understand that the discussions on sexuality given in the book are far ahead of the sensibilities of its time, but the manner in which they are presented - the very presentation of the plot, if you will - is very off-putting.
Unsurprisingly, then, Sons and Lovers was incredibly hard to finish. In fact, never have I taken as much time with a book before as I did with this one. I won't say that it was absolutely unrewarding, but I wouldn't recommend it, either.
