I hate you, I love you, let's chat, let's murder....the duality of humanity is on full display in Sons and Lovers.
The first half is a well-drawn classic portrait of English struggle, then it zags where you don't even see a zig coming.
Characters don’t seek sex they thirst for a communion of soul. Taboo love, non-traditional violence, even slick writing tricks like changing POV mid scene. Expect some incredibly serious drama, and everyone waking up far too early.
Recommended to daring readers and those passionate for coal mining.

Terrible. A woman who suffers from an emotionally abusive husband, raises sons on whom she transfers her romantic feelings. Her sons grow up emotionally stunted and the rest of the book treats us to their painful relationships with women whose inner lives the boys completely ignore. Ick.

It wa hard to put down simply for the fact I started it. Got somewhat heavy at times. However, pretty interesting if you took the time.

I enjoy D. H. Lawrence's style of writing and he has a way of describing emotions that make you realize that you felt exactly like that at one point in your life, but never noticed until now. He does that nearly every chapter. However, the actual storyline was not very riveting. There was no build, no tension, it seemed merely like a series of clips from this family's life.
