A welcome escape into a sweet English town. Very romantic and charming.

I had to stop reading this. There was some mild fat phobia in the other Jenny Colgan book I read, but it was definitely amplified in this book. First, Rosie takes it upon herself to limit the amount of candy one customer is “allowed” to buy (he is repeatedly described as the fattest man in town.) Then, Stephen, (who I think we are supposed to find attractive as a love interest??) refers to Rosie’s niece as the “sugar plum elephant” and Hetty makes a snide remark about the child eating too much cake.

This is gross and unnecessary. I’m done.

Story of love lost and then found again. Set in England, Rosie Hopkins is prepping for a white Christmas. She is settling in with Stephen, and trying to navigate a rocky relationship with his mother. Then, tragedy strikes the small town, and children are injured.
Meanwhile, in a nursing home, a new man, James Boyd, has come to live. His son brings him, and James is suffering from dementia. But, then he sees Lillian Hopklns, and instantly feels a connection. Lillian is reminded of her old love, Henry, who died in the war.
Rosie and Stephen have a rough patch, and Rosie is resigned to believe that they will never marry. Christmas brings a pleasant surprise to all.
Cute story, just OK for me.

This is a most unusual romance novel as the romance is almost in a supporting role. A charming Christmas read, I was completely captivated by the characters and the town.  A lot happens in this novel that borders on excess but it never goes over the line.  This book was featured at the first Devoured (book and chocolate pairing) event at Daisy Chain Book Co. Recommended.

Just what I needed between some dark non fiction. I love the "reader" and all of the Ozzie and British slang.
